NTN registration

NTN Registration for Individuals in Pakistan

Registering with FBR is the first step to becoming a filer. For individuals there is no separate number to remember: once you are registered, your CNIC number is your NTN. We register you on IRIS and then file your return.

Last date: the return for tax year 2026 is normally due by 30 September 2026. Filed after that, an individual pays a Rs 25,000 surcharge under the Finance Act 2026 to get onto the Active Taxpayer List.

What NTN registration actually is

NTN registration means creating your taxpayer record on FBR’s IRIS portal. For an individual, the National Tax Number is simply your 13-digit CNIC number once that registration is complete. Companies and associations of persons are issued a separate NTN.

Registration on its own does not make you a filer. You become a filer when you file your income tax return, which puts you on the Active Taxpayer List. That is why we treat registration and the first return as one job rather than two.

IRIS verifies you through the mobile number and email address you register with, sending a separate code to each. The mobile number has to be on a SIM issued against your own CNIC, and a mismatch there is one of the most common reasons registrations get stuck.

New to this? Our guide to becoming a filer in Pakistan covers the whole process.

What we take care of

Your IRIS registration

We complete the registration with you, using the verification codes FBR sends to your phone and email.

Business details, if you have a business

If you trade or run a business, your registration records it too. We tell you exactly what is needed before we start.

Your first return

Registration is only step one. We then prepare and file your income tax return and wealth statement, so you are on the Active Taxpayer List.

What you need for NTN registration

Registration needs very little. Your return needs more, and we send a separate list for that after the call.

  • Your CNIC
  • A mobile number on a SIM issued against your own CNIC
  • A personal email address you can access
  • Your current address
  • Your business name and address, if you run a business

Questions people ask

Is my CNIC my NTN?

For individuals, yes. Once you are registered with FBR, your 13-digit CNIC number serves as your NTN. Companies and associations of persons are issued a separate NTN.

Does having an NTN make me a filer?

No. An NTN means you are registered. You become a filer, and appear on the Active Taxpayer List, only once you file your income tax return.

Why does the mobile number have to be on my own CNIC?

IRIS verifies you by sending codes to your mobile number and your email, and the number is checked against your CNIC. A SIM registered to someone else, even a family member, will not work.

I registered years ago but never filed. What now?

You already have an NTN, so the next step is filing. We check which years are open and what each one needs, then agree the order of work with you.

Aam sawalat

NTN kaise banayein?

FBR ke IRIS portal par registration se. Is ke liye CNIC, apne CNIC par registered mobile number aur email chahiye. Individuals ke liye registration ke baad CNIC number hi NTN hota hai.

Kya NTN banne se main filer ban jaunga?

Nahi. NTN sirf registration hai. Filer tab bante hain jab income tax return file hoti hai aur naam Active Taxpayer List mein aata hai.

Kisi aur ke naam ki SIM chal jayegi?

Nahi. FBR codes mobile aur email par bhejta hai, aur SIM aap ke apne CNIC par registered honi chahiye.
